The idea for this site came as an indirect result of my unemployment, and from all of the positive events that came about during a rather uncomfortable period in my life.
Back then, a dear friend and mentor of mine encouraged me that “We will all land.” However, acceptance of that positive advice was not always easy. Sometimes we need to land quicker.
So before I eventually landed, I chose to help others in the job search, and proactively share some of the knowledge and techniques which I picked up along the way. That fall I gave a talk to those who were in the same trenches as I was. And, shortly after that, I was asked to join a volunteer team, dedicated to helping struggling job searchers.
That first presentation was not necessarily a very professional one, but it was well prepared, and it was from the heart – genuinely seeking to help others who may have been struggling even more than me.
Reflecting back to that scary time, I noticed that I gained some peace by helping others. I was lucky enough to receive some outplacement training just after being laid off from my steady job of almost twenty years. And I could pass on that gift by sharing it.
The idea was to use these presentations to provide a boost to my fellow job searchers. I would visual it as providing the lift needed to surmount a wall, like we’ve probably seen many times in a James Bond-like espionage film. That vision soon formed itself into the phrase “to give a leg up”, and the concept behind LeggUpp was born.
Why is it LeggUpp and not LegUp? Well, on the internet, things don’t always fall into place as one would like. Plus, sometimes having a slightly different, but memorable name is more useful than the expected one.
But the truth of the matter is that LegUp wasn’t available. So, I added an extra ‘G’ and ‘P’ to emphasize that effective job searchers need to “Get Positive!”.
So, the point of this about page is the LeggUpp is about helping you. In fact, help is just one of many synonyms which describe our mission. To give you a better idea of what we’re about, have a look below at the way Thesaurus.com portrays the idea of “giving a leg up”.
